FWC 2026 League Player Base: Which Domestic Leagues Supply the Most World Cup Players?

A league-based view of FWC 2026: which domestic league systems supplied the most players, how many were domestic or foreign internationals, and how their representation changed by the Round of 16.

The table below shows how many FWC 2026 players are registered in each domestic league system represented at the tournament.

The ranking includes the total number of players from each league, with a split between domestic players — players representing the same country as the league system — and foreign players, meaning players representing national teams other than the country of the league in which they play.

The table also shows how many players from each league remained in the tournament from the Round of 16 onwards, and the percentage decrease compared with the initial group-stage player base.

This gives a different view of the tournament: not by national teams, but by the domestic league systems that supplied the player pool for FWC 2026.

The data confirms the strong concentration of FWC 2026 players in a relatively small group of league systems. England is clearly the largest supplier, with 204 players at the start of the tournament and 98 still represented from the Round of 16 onwards. Germany, Spain, France and Italy complete the top five by total player supply.

The Round of 16 also changes the picture significantly. The total player pool falls from 1,248 to 416 players, which means a natural tournament reduction of two thirds. However, the decrease is not distributed evenly across leagues. Spain retains 56 of its 85 players, Brazil 19 of 32, Mexico 15 of 26, Argentina 12 of 17, and Egypt 18 of 20. These leagues show a relatively strong Round of 16 survival rate.

By contrast, several leagues with a substantial initial presence lose almost all or all of their representation after the group stage. Qatar falls from 29 players to only 1, while Turkey falls from 45 to 5 and the Netherlands from 38 to 5. Czech Republic, Iran, South Africa, Uzbekistan, Australia-New Zealand and Iraq lose their entire initial representation by the Round of 16.

The table therefore measures not only the scale of each league’s contribution to FWC 2026, but also the durability of that contribution as the tournament moves into the knockout phase.
