What If Every National Team Played at the World Cup? The FWC 2026 One Table

The FWC 2026 One Table answers a simple question: what would the World Cup look like if every national team taking part in the qualification process competed in one global tournament?

What if Gianni Infantino’s dream of a truly global World Cup were taken literally—and every national team entered the same competition?

We have compiled a single table covering all 209 national teams that participated in the qualification process for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. From the eventual world champions to the teams eliminated in the earliest qualifying round, every participant has been placed within one unified competitive hierarchy.

Creating such a table required more than simply combining the official standings. The six continental confederations used substantially different qualification formats, with different numbers of rounds, entry points and play-off structures. To make their results globally comparable, we developed a universal eight-level qualification scheme covering the entire road to the World Cup.

The final positions are determined primarily by the stage reached. Teams eliminated at the same stage are then ranked according to their average performance across all matches played in the competition—including both the qualifiers and the World Cup final tournament (Points – Pts, Difference Goals – DG & Goals Scored per match – GS).

The table also shows each country’s position in the FIFA Men’s World Ranking as of 20 July 2026 and the difference between that position and its place in our complete FWC 2026 table. A positive figure means that the team finished higher in the competition than in the FIFA Ranking; a negative figure means that it finished lower.

FWC 2026 One Table Ranking Methodology

The Complete FWC 2026 Table covers all national teams that participated in the 2026 FIFA World Cup competition, understood as the entire competitive process comprising both continental qualification and the World Cup final tournament.

The classification is based on two successive layers:

1. the stage reached by each team;
2. performance-based tiebreakers applied among teams that reached the same stage.

1. Stage reached

The stage reached is the primary ranking criterion. A team that progressed further in the competition is always ranked above a team eliminated at an earlier stage, irrespective of their respective points-per-match averages.

World Cup final tournament

The teams participating in the final tournament are classified according to the following stages:

• Ch – World Champion;
• RU – Runners-up;
• 3rd – Third place;
• 4th – Fourth place;
• QF – Quarter-finals;
• R16 – Round of 16;
• R32 – Round of 32;
• GR – Group stage.

The first four positions are determined by the results of the World Cup final and the third-place play-off. The remaining teams are ranked primarily according to the knockout round or tournament stage they reached.

2026 World Cup Qualification Ranking

Because the qualification systems differed substantially between the six confederations, the original continental rounds could not be compared directly.

We therefore mapped all continental qualification stages onto a single universal structure consisting of eight levels:

The allocation of continental rounds to Q1–Q8 is not based merely on their official names. It reflects their structural position within the qualification process.

The methodology distinguishes three reference points within each confederation:

• the initial phase, meaning the earliest qualification stage;
• the main phase, meaning the latest stage at which some teams could enter qualification;
• the final phase, meaning the last stage of the qualification path, including the intercontinental play-offs where applicable.

The main phases of all confederations are aligned at the same point in the universal scheme. The rounds preceding and following them are then mapped according to their chronological and structural relationship with the initial, main and final phases.

2. Ranking teams within the same stage

Teams that reached the same World Cup stage or universal qualification level are ranked using the following criteria, applied in order:

1. average points per match;
2. average goal difference per match;
3. average goals scored per match;
4. total number of matches played.

The next criterion is used only when the preceding criterion does not separate the teams.

All matches played by a team in the 2026 World Cup competition are included. For teams that reached the final tournament, this means that both qualification matches and World Cup tournament matches are taken into account.

3. Average points per match

The primary tiebreaker is the average number of points earned per match:$$\text{Average points}= \frac{\text{Total points earned}}{\text{Number of matches played}}$$Average points=Number of matches playedTotal points earned​

Points are awarded as follows:

This modified system distinguishes between victories achieved in regulation time, after extra time and through a penalty shootout. It also recognises that a team losing only after extra time or on penalties performed differently from a team defeated in regulation time.

4. Average goal difference per match

If two or more teams at the same stage have an identical points-per-match average, they are compared according to average goal difference:$$\text{Average goal difference}= \frac{\text{Goals scored}-\text{Goals conceded}} {\text{Number of matches played}}$$Average goal difference=Number of matches playedGoals scored−Goals conceded​

Goals scored during penalty shootouts are excluded. A penalty shootout therefore does not alter either the goals scored or the goals conceded totals.

5. Average goals scored per match

If average goal difference does not separate the teams, average goals scored per match is used:$$\text{Average goals scored}= \frac{\text{Goals scored}} {\text{Number of matches played}}$$Average goals scored=Number of matches playedGoals scored​

Once again, penalty-shootout kicks are excluded.

6. Number of matches played

If the teams remain level after all three average-performance criteria have been applied, the team that played more matches is ranked higher.

This final criterion gives precedence to a performance maintained over a larger competitive sample.

FWC 2026 One Table vs the FIFA World Ranking

The FIFA column shows the team’s position in the FIFA Men’s World Ranking as of 20 July 2026.

The FIFA Diff column is calculated by comparing that position with the team’s place in the Complete FWC 2026 Table:

• a positive value means that the team finished higher in the World Cup competition than in the FIFA Ranking;
• a negative value means that the team finished lower;
• the equals sign (=) means that its position is identical in both classifications.

This comparison should not be interpreted as a claim that the tournament table is an alternative general strength rating. The two classifications measure different things. The FIFA Ranking evaluates national teams over a broader series of matches and a longer period, whereas the Complete FWC 2026 Table orders teams according to their performance within one specific competition cycle.

It nevertheless provides an interesting picture of which teams exceeded their broader international standing—and which failed to translate their ranking position into results on the road to the 2026 World Cup.
