The I-League used to be the highest tier league in the Indian football system. However, the new franchise-based league, the Indian Super League (ISL), was officially launched on 21 October 2013. Initially, the AFC recognised the ISL as a tournament rather than a league. However, the ISL was granted official recognition by the AFC in 2017, resulting in two top divisions in India from 2017/18. Both divisions were identified for the KA Football League Global Rating as ‘the one league’ and achieved the same score in subsequent seasons. The Indian football clubs have agreed to collaborate on a league roadmap. Additionally, a fully implemented promotion and relegation system will be in place for the top league by no later than the 2024-25 season, and the two parallel leagues will be abolished. According to this roadmap, the Indian Super League (ISL) will become the premier league competition in Indian football starting from the 2019-20 season. As a result, the Indian Super League will be the only top-tier league in the country starting from the 2022-23 season. The I-League has lost its top-tier status, although the champion of the league will have a chance to be promoted to the ISL without paying a participation fee. As a result of losing its top league status in the country, the I-League was automatically downgraded and moved from the National Grade to the Local Grade, which is the lowest subclass of the Elementary Class, starting from the 2022/2023 season. The Local Grade has one collective spot for all divisions in this subclass. The global ranking of the I-League will not be presented until it returns to at least the Regional Grade.
